HOW IT WORKS

Convert FLAC to ADX in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your FLAC files

Drag in the FLAC tracks or sound effects you want to use in an ADX-based game or tool.

02

Convert to ADX

Start the conversion. The FLAC is decoded and encoded as standard ADX (header type 3) with the sample rate kept.

03

Download the ADX

Download each ADX file, or the whole set as one ZIP.

FLAC

FLAC is the open lossless audio format, about half the size of WAV with every sample preserved.

ADX

ADX is CRI Middleware's game audio format, a 4-bit ADPCM codec used in Sega and many later console and PC games.

FLAC and ADX compared

SOURCE

FLAC

The Free Lossless Audio Codec was released by Xiph.Org in 2001 and is the standard for lossless music downloads and CD archives. It typically shrinks audio to 50 to 60% of WAV size, decodes back to the exact original samples, supports up to 32-bit and high sample rates, and carries full tags and cover art.

TARGET

ADX

CRI Middleware's audio format, built for games. ADX uses 4-bit ADPCM, about a quarter the size of 16-bit WAV, so it decodes cheaply during gameplay and supports gapless loops. It shipped on the Sega Dreamcast and in many later console and PC games, and its newer successor is HCA.

USE CASES

Use Cases for FLAC to ADX

When ADX fits the next step better than the original FLAC.

logo

Replace music in a mod you are allowed to edit

Build ADX replacement tracks from lossless FLAC so the audio is compressed only once.

logo

Prepare fan-made audio for an ADX game engine

Convert your own compositions to ADX for a project that loads ADX streams.

logo

Test ADX playback in vgmstream

Make a quick ADX from a known FLAC to check how a game or player handles it.

logo

Match a legacy CRI pipeline

Older CRI-based toolchains expect ADX input instead of FLAC.

logo

Prototype a sound bank

Create ADX test assets before building a full CRI Atom project.

logo

Compare ADPCM against the lossless original

Keep the FLAC and the ADX side by side to judge the quality difference.

logo

Convert voice lines for a fan translation

Prepare recorded dialogue for a project you have permission to modify.

logo

Build homebrew audio

Create ADX files for homebrew projects that read CRI audio.

logo

Standardize a project's sound assets

Convert approved FLAC masters to the ADX format the rest of the project uses.

logo

Give testers a matching file

Share an ADX made from the same FLAC master so QA compares like with like.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which FLAC Files Can I Convert to ADX?

Start from the best FLAC you have. Lossless input gives the cleanest ADX.

16 and 24-bit FLAC

Any common bit depth is accepted and encoded to ADX's 4-bit ADPCM.

Any common sample rate

The ADX keeps the FLAC's sample rate, so match the rate the game expects before converting.

Mono and stereo

Both are kept as they are. ADX holds only mono or stereo, so surround FLAC is mixed down to stereo.

A soundtrack folder

Upload many FLAC files and download the ADX files together as a ZIP.

Lossy sources

If you only have MP3 or OGG, our MP3 to ADX and OGG to ADX converters handle those.

Only convert audio you own or have permission to use. Having a file doesn't automatically give you the right to put it into someone else's game.

TROUBLESHOOTING

ADX Not Playing in Your Game?

Most problems come down to settings the game expects, not the conversion itself.

01

It plays at the wrong speed or pitch

The game probably expects a different sample rate. Check the original ADX and resample the FLAC to match before converting.

02

The game stays silent or crashes

Many commercial games use encrypted ADX with a game-specific key. A standard ADX may not play in those titles.

03

The music stops instead of looping

The ADX has no loop points. Add them in your ADX tool or game engine.

04

It's much louder or quieter

Compare the track's loudness with the game's other audio and adjust the FLAC before converting.

05

Stereo is now mono, or the other way round

The ADX keeps the FLAC's channel count. Match the original game file's channels first.

06

Still not working

Make sure the new file uses the exact name and folder of the one it replaces, then test it in the actual game or build.
