HOW IT WORKS

Convert DSP to WAV in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your DSP file

Drag and drop a .dsp file ripped from a Nintendo game or made with DSPADPCM or VGAudio, or select it from your device.

02

Convert to WAV

Keep WAV as the output format and start. The DSP-ADPCM audio is decoded to 16-bit PCM.

03

Download the WAV

Download one WAV per DSP file. It opens in Audacity, any DAW and common media players.

DSP

A .dsp file holds Nintendo DSP-ADPCM audio with a standard header, as written by Nintendo's DSPADPCM tool or by VGAudio. It is used for music and sounds in GameCube, Wii, 3DS and Switch games and in fan mods. A file can be mono or interleaved multichannel, often with a loop point.

WAV

WAV is a widely supported audio container often used for uncompressed PCM audio. It is common in recording, editing, production, broadcast, and applications that prefer straightforward, high-fidelity audio.

FILE FORMATS

DSP and WAV compared

SOURCE

DSP

A .dsp file holds Nintendo DSP-ADPCM audio with a small standard header, as used by GameCube and Wii games and their SDK tools. Most DSP files are mono; stereo music is often split into two files, one per channel. The format is decoded by the consoles' audio DSP, which gave it its name.

TARGET

WAV

Microsoft and IBM defined WAV in 1991. It normally stores plain PCM audio with no compression, which is why editors, DAWs, broadcast systems and speech tools accept it without question. The price is size: CD-quality stereo takes about 10 MB per minute, and tagging support is limited.

USE CASES

Use Cases for DSP to WAV

Practical workflows where DSP to WAV conversion is useful.

logo

Listen to GameCube and Wii music

Play .dsp tracks ripped from GameCube or Wii discs in any media player, without Dolphin.

logo

Check a custom track for a mod

Modders who encode music with DSPADPCM or VGAudio can decode the .dsp back to WAV to check the sound and the loop before testing the mod.

logo

Hear where a loop restarts

Files with an inner loop play the intro, the loop twice and a 10 second fade, so you can hear how the loop joins.

logo

Rebuild stereo from split L and R files

Games that store stereo as name_L.dsp and name_R.dsp give one mono WAV per file. Combine the two WAVs in an editor to rebuild the stereo track.

logo

Edit game music in a DAW

Open the WAV in Audacity, Reaper or FL Studio to cut, remix or master a Nintendo track.

logo

Archive music from older consoles

Keep decoded WAV copies of GameCube and Wii music that open on any computer, without game-specific tools.

logo

Sample Nintendo sounds

Producers can sample GameCube and Wii sounds in WAV, which every sampler and DAW accepts.

logo

Use game music in a video

Import the WAV into Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro for a review or retrospective.

logo

Sort a folder of ripped sounds

Convert many numbered .dsp files in one job and audition the WAVs in a file browser to find the track you need.

logo

Encode to another format yourself

Start from the WAV to make an MP3, FLAC or OGG file with your own encoder for a phone or a website.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which DSP Files Can I Convert?

DSP files from GameCube and Wii games are supported.

Standard DSP headers

Files written by Nintendo's tools and game rips.

Mono DSP

The most common layout.

Split stereo pairs

Upload each channel file; each becomes its own WAV.

Looping sounds

Loops are rendered the way the game plays them.

A folder of files

Upload many DSP files and download the WAVs as a ZIP.

Only convert audio from games you own or have permission to use.

TROUBLESHOOTING

WAV Not Sounding Right?

Game audio works differently from normal music files, which explains most surprises.

01

The track repeats and fades out

Looping game music is rendered the way the game plays it: the looped section plays once more, then fades out over 10 seconds. A loop covering the whole track plays once.

02

It says the DSP is incomplete

A file holding less than 97% of the audio its header describes was cut off while extracting or downloading. Upload the complete file.

03

It says the file can't be decoded

The file is damaged, isn't really DSP audio, or was extracted with the wrong tool. Extract it again from the game files and retry.

04

The WAV is very large

WAV is uncompressed, about 10 MB per minute for 44.1 kHz stereo and more for higher rates or extra channels.

05

Stereo came out as two files

Many games store stereo as separate left and right DSP files. Combine the two WAVs in an editor.

06

A .dsp from another program fails

Other software also uses .dsp, for example for project files. Only Nintendo DSP audio converts.
