DJVU
AT&T Labs developed DjVu in 1996 to store scanned pages far smaller than PDF scans. It separates text and line art from the background and compresses each layer differently, so a 300-page scanned book can fit in a few megabytes. Digital libraries and archives use it widely, but most devices need a special viewer.
