DDS
DDS is the DirectDraw Surface texture format used by PC and console games, stored in a GPU-ready compressed form.

JPG is the most widely supported photo format, with lossy compression that keeps files small.

Microsoft introduced DirectDraw Surface with DirectX 7. Games store textures as DDS because graphics cards can read its block-compressed formats (DXT1 to DXT5, BC1 to BC7) directly from memory. A DDS often contains a chain of smaller mipmaps and can hold cube maps for skyboxes. Normal photo viewers can't open it.
TARGET
The format every phone, browser, printer kiosk and social site accepts. JPG compresses photos by discarding detail the eye is unlikely to notice, so a 24 MP picture fits in a few megabytes. It has no transparency and only 8 bits per color channel, and every re-save loses a little more quality.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Game textures often look odd outside the game, for good reasons.

That is a normal map. It stores surface direction as color and is meant for the game's lighting, not for viewing.

Some textures are stored in linear color or packed with several maps in one file. They look different outside the game's shader.

Some DDS files are icons or UI pieces, and some games ship low-resolution textures.

JPG has no transparency, so the alpha channel is flattened. Use the DDS to PNG converter to keep it.

Rare or console-specific DDS variants can't always be decoded. Re-export the texture as a standard DDS in your modding tool.

Check the file opens in a texture viewer. A file extracted with the wrong tool may be incomplete.
