HOW IT WORKS

Convert CR3 to JPG in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your CR3 files

Drag in CR3 photos from your EOS R or EOS M camera's card, the Canon app transfer folder or a backup. You can add a whole shoot at once.

02

Convert to JPG

Start the conversion. Each RAW file is developed with LibRaw, an open-source RAW decoder used by many photo apps, and saved as JPG.

03

Download the JPG files

Download each JPG as it finishes or the whole set as one ZIP. Your original CR3 files stay untouched on your device.

CR3

CR3 is Canon's current RAW format, used since 2018 by the EOS R mirrorless range, the EOS M50 and later DSLRs such as the 90D.

JPG

JPG is the most widely supported photo format, with lossy compression that keeps files small.

FILE FORMATS

CR3 and JPG compared

SOURCE

CR3

Canon replaced CR2 with CR3 in 2018. It is built on the ISO media file structure and adds C-RAW, a compressed option that cuts file size by roughly 40% with very little visible loss. EOS R, RP, R5, R6, R7, R8, R10, R50, M50, M6 Mark II, 90D and 850D all shoot CR3, and many older programs still can't read it.

TARGET

JPG

The format every phone, browser, printer kiosk and social site accepts. JPG compresses photos by discarding detail the eye is unlikely to notice, so a 24 MP picture fits in a few megabytes. It has no transparency and only 8 bits per color channel, and every re-save loses a little more quality.

USE CASES

Use Cases for CR3 to JPG

When a JPG works better than the original RAW file.

logo

Open CR3 where your software can't

Older Lightroom 6, Photoshop CS6 and many free viewers never added CR3 support. Convert to JPG instead of upgrading software.

logo

Share from an EOS R or RP

Send JPGs from an EOS R or RP shoot to people who don't edit RAW.

logo

Fix a RAW-only card

When an EOS camera was left on RAW instead of RAW+JPEG, convert the CR3 files to get viewable copies.

logo

Post wedding or event previews

Get a handful of JPGs online the same evening and edit the full set later.

logo

Upload to stock and portfolio sites

Most portfolio platforms and stock agencies want JPG. Convert your selects directly.

logo

Print at a lab

Photo labs and kiosks accept JPG. Convert the CR3 files you want printed.

logo

Share from a phone after Canon Camera Connect

If you pulled CR3 files onto your phone, convert them in the mobile browser and post the JPGs.

logo

Build a quick contact sheet

JPGs open instantly in any image viewer, so reviewing hundreds of shots is faster.

logo

Attach photos to reports and emails

A JPG fits in an email or document where a 30 MB CR3 would not.

logo

Send proofs to a client

Let the client choose from JPG proofs, then edit only the chosen CR3 files.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which CR3 Files Can I Convert?

CR3 files from Canon mirrorless cameras, recent DSLRs and PowerShots are supported.

EOS R and RP

CR3 files from the first EOS R mirrorless bodies, the EOS R and EOS RP, convert directly. Later R models may need the DNG workaround below.

EOS M and recent DSLRs

EOS M50, M6 Mark II, M200, 90D, 850D / Rebel T8i and 250D / SL3 all write CR3.

RAW from PowerShot compacts

Recent PowerShot G models such as the G5 X Mark II and G7 X Mark III write CR3 as well.

Older Canon CR2 files

Pre-2018 EOS DSLRs use CR2. Use our CR2 to JPG converter for those files.

A whole shoot

Add every CR3 from a card at once and download the JPGs together as a ZIP.

TROUBLESHOOTING

CR3 Photo Not Looking Right?

These are the most common reasons a converted CR3 differs from what you expected.

01

The colors don't match the camera's preview

The camera screen shows a JPEG made with your Picture Style. The JPG is developed without it, so tweak color and contrast in any photo editor if you want that look back.

02

The photo looks flat or a little dark

RAW files are developed with neutral contrast so no highlight or shadow detail is thrown away. Add contrast or brightness in an editor, or edit the CR3 in a RAW editor if you need precise control.

03

My Lightroom edits are missing

Edits live in your editor's catalog or an .xmp sidecar file, not in the CR3. Export from that editor to get the edited version.

04

A file from a brand-new camera won't convert

Each new camera model tweaks its RAW data, and decoders need an update to read it. If a CR3 from a very recent body fails, convert it to DNG with the free Adobe DNG Converter and use our DNG to JPG tool. Very recent EOS R bodies are the most likely to be affected.

05

A dual-pixel or HDR shot looks odd

Special CR3 modes, such as Dual Pixel RAW or HDR PQ, store extra data for Canon's software. The JPG is developed from the standard image only.

06

It says the file is damaged

This usually means the CR3 was cut off while copying from the card. Copy it again from the original card or backup. A file that opens as a tiny preview in other apps is often incomplete too.
