CR2
CR2 is Canon's RAW format for EOS DSLRs released from 2004 to about 2018. It stores the sensor data before any in-camera processing.
JPG
JPG is the most widely supported photo format, with lossy compression that keeps files small.

Canon's RAW format for a generation of EOS DSLRs, from the 20D and 5D series to the Rebel line, 7D and 5D Mark IV. A CR2 holds the 12 or 14-bit data straight from the sensor plus a JPEG preview, so it keeps far more highlight and shadow detail than a JPG. Few apps outside photo editors can open it.
TARGET
The format every phone, browser, printer kiosk and social site accepts. JPG compresses photos by discarding detail the eye is unlikely to notice, so a 24 MP picture fits in a few megabytes. It has no transparency and only 8 bits per color channel, and every re-save loses a little more quality.

SUPPORTED FILES
CR2 files from any Canon EOS camera that writes them convert the same way.
Files from the EOS 5D, 6D, 7D and 1D series, the 80D, 77D and earlier xxD bodies, and the Rebel / xxxD line all convert directly.
Canon PowerShot G-series and S-series compacts that shoot RAW write CR2 too, and convert the same way.
Cameras from 2018 onward, including the EOS R series, use CR3. Use our CR3 to JPG converter for those.

Edits made in Lightroom or DPP aren't stored in the CR2, so you get the photo as shot. Export from your editor for the edited version.
TROUBLESHOOTING
Most differences come from how RAW files are developed, not from the conversion itself.

The camera screen shows a JPEG made with your Picture Style. The JPG is developed without it, so tweak color and contrast in any photo editor if you want that look back.

RAW files are developed with neutral contrast so no highlight or shadow detail is thrown away. Add contrast or brightness in an editor, or edit the CR2 in a RAW editor if you need precise control.

Edits live in your editor's catalog or an .xmp sidecar file, not in the CR2. Export from that editor to get the edited version.

Each new camera model tweaks its RAW data, and decoders need an update to read it. If a CR2 from a very recent body fails, convert it to DNG with the free Adobe DNG Converter and use our DNG to JPG tool.

This usually means the CR2 was cut off while copying from the card. Copy it again from the original card or backup. A file that opens as a tiny preview in other apps is often incomplete too.

A JPG has 8 bits per color channel, so very smooth gradients can band after heavy editing. Make big exposure or color changes on the CR2 in a RAW editor, then export.
