CAF is Apple's Core Audio Format, a container used for iMessage audio messages, Logic and GarageBand loops and iOS apps.

Apple created the Core Audio Format in 2005 as a container without WAV's 4 GB limit. A CAF can hold PCM, AAC, ALAC, Opus and other codecs. You meet it as iMessage audio messages, Apple Loops, Xcode sound assets and recordings from iOS apps. Outside Apple software, most players don't recognize it.

MPEG-1 Audio Layer III has been the universal music format since the 1990s. It compresses audio by removing sounds the ear is unlikely to hear, so a song takes a few megabytes instead of tens. ID3 tags carry the title, artist and album art, and every phone, browser, car stereo and editor plays it.

TROUBLESHOOTING
These are the usual reasons a CAF converts differently than expected.

Audio messages are recorded for speech at a modest quality. The MP3 keeps what was recorded and can't add detail.

Apple Loops repeat inside GarageBand and Logic. The MP3 contains a single pass of the loop.

Some recordings include trailing silence. Trim it in any audio editor.

CAF files rarely carry tags. Add title and artist in your music app after converting.

A CAF using a rare or protected codec can't always be decoded. Re-export it from the source app as PCM or AAC.

Make sure the file wasn't cut off while copying from the phone. Export it again and retry.
