HOW IT WORKS

Convert BNK to WAV in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your BNK file

Drag and drop a Wwise .bnk SoundBank from a game's audio folder, or select it from your device.

02

Extract the sounds

Keep WAV as the output format and start. Each complete sound stored in the bank is decoded to its own 16-bit WAV.

03

Download the WAVs

Download the sounds together as a ZIP, numbered name-1.wav, name-2.wav and so on. A bank with one sound gives a single WAV.

BNK

In games, BNK is most often the Audiokinetic Wwise SoundBank format. A bank stores a game's sound events and playback structure, and often embeds the sounds themselves as Wwise .wem audio. Some banks hold only events, or only short prefetch clips of sounds that the game streams from separate .wem files. Media players can't open .bnk files.

WAV

WAV is a RIFF-based audio format commonly used for uncompressed PCM audio. It is easy to edit and broadly supported in recording, broadcast, and desktop audio workflows.

SOURCE

BNK

A BNK is an Audiokinetic Wwise SoundBank, the audio package of games built with Wwise. Banks hold events and playback rules, and often embed short sounds such as effects and voice lines as numbered entries, while longer sounds stream from separate .wem files. The embedded sounds have numbers, not names.

TARGET

WAV

Microsoft and IBM defined WAV in 1991. It normally stores plain PCM audio with no compression, which is why editors, DAWs, broadcast systems and speech tools accept it without question. The price is size: CD-quality stereo takes about 10 MB per minute, and tagging support is limited.

USE CASES

Use Cases for BNK to WAV

Practical workflows where BNK to WAV conversion is useful.

logo

Get every sound from a bank at once

Turn a bank of footsteps, impacts or UI sounds into a set of WAVs instead of extracting them one by one.

logo

Find a sound to replace in a mod

Listen through the numbered WAVs to find the effect or voice line you want to swap out.

logo

Check a rebuilt bank before release

Mod authors can confirm that a repacked bank holds the right sounds, in the right order and at the right length.

logo

Open Xbox 360 and PS3 banks

Big-endian SoundBanks from Xbox 360 and PS3 builds extract the same way as PC banks.

logo

Handle banks that mix codecs

A bank that combines PCM, Vorbis and Opus sounds still gives one WAV per sound, each at its own sample rate and channel count.

logo

Load bank sounds into a sampler

Bring a whole set of weapon, creature or interface sounds into a DAW or sampler as standard WAV files.

logo

Compare sounds between game patches

Extract the same bank from two game versions and compare the WAVs to see which sounds changed.

logo

Listen to a localized dialogue bank

Extract voice lines from a language-specific bank, such as an English or Japanese one, to compare the deliveries.

logo

Study a game's sound design

Hear each layer of a game's effects on its own to learn how its sound team built the mix.

logo

Archive a game's embedded sounds

Keep the sounds of a bank as standard WAV files that audio software will open for years to come.

TROUBLESHOOTING

WAV Not Sounding Right?

Game audio works differently from normal music files, which explains most surprises.

01

I got a ZIP of numbered files

The file held several sounds, so each one became its own WAV, numbered in bank order. Sounds have numbers, not names.

02

It says the bank has no audio

Banks such as Init.bnk hold only events or keep sounds in separate .wem files. Convert those .wem files instead.

03

Short clips are missing

Prefetch clips, the first moments of sounds streamed from .wem files, are skipped so only complete sounds are delivered.

04

Numbering skips entries

Skipped entries close up the numbering, so download 5 isn't always the bank's fifth entry.

05

The track repeats and fades out

Looping game music is rendered the way the game plays it: the looped section plays once more, then fades out over 10 seconds. A loop covering the whole track plays once.

06

It says the file can't be decoded

The file is damaged, isn't really BNK audio, or was extracted with the wrong tool. Extract it again from the game files and retry.
