HOW IT WORKS

Convert BMP to PNG in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your BMP files

Drag in .bmp images from Paint, a scanner, old software or a device export.

02

03

Download the PNG

Download each PNG, or several together as one ZIP.

BMP

BMP is Windows' original bitmap format, usually uncompressed, so files are large but simple to read.

PNG

PNG is a lossless image format with full transparency support, the usual choice for graphics, screenshots and editing copies.

FILE FORMATS

BMP and PNG compared

SOURCE

BMP

Microsoft's bitmap format dates back to early Windows and OS/2. Most BMPs store pixels uncompressed, row by row, which makes them easy for any program to read and very large. A 12 MP photo as BMP is around 36 MB. Paint, older Windows software, scanners and embedded devices still produce it.

TARGET

PNG

PNG stores every pixel exactly, so re-saving never degrades it. It supports full alpha transparency and 8 or 16 bits per channel, which makes it the standard for logos, UI graphics, screenshots and images that will be edited again. Photos as PNG are much larger than the same photo as JPG.

USE CASES

Use Cases for BMP to PNG

When you want the same pixels in a smaller, web-ready file.

logo

Shrink large bitmaps

PNG compresses without loss, so a BMP often shrinks dramatically.

logo

Upload Paint images to the web

Websites and forums accept PNG; many reject BMP.

logo

Keep screenshots pixel-perfect

Old screenshot tools saved BMP. PNG keeps every pixel.

logo

Share scans from old scanners

Scanner software often saved BMP. PNG is smaller and universal.

logo

Prepare pixel art

PNG keeps hard edges and exact colors.

logo

Convert embedded-device screenshots

Industrial and medical devices often export BMP.

logo

Add images to documentation

PNG works in wikis, Markdown and help centers.

logo

Archive old Windows graphics

Keep the same pixels in a smaller format.

logo

Use bitmaps in design tools

Figma and Canva prefer PNG.

logo

Prepare game sprites

Old game sprites in BMP become PNG for modern engines.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which BMP Files Can I Convert?

BMP files of any common bit depth are supported.

24-bit BMP

Standard color bitmaps from Paint and most software.

32-bit BMP with alpha

Transparency is kept when the BMP's header declares an alpha mask.

8-bit and lower

Palette-based and monochrome bitmaps.

Compressed BMP

RLE-compressed bitmaps are decoded.

A batch

Upload several BMPs and download the PNGs as a ZIP.

TROUBLESHOOTING

PNG Not Looking Right?

These explain the few differences you might see.

01

Transparency didn't come through

Many 32-bit BMPs carry an unused fourth channel. Transparency is kept only when the header declares an alpha mask, matching how Windows shows the file.

02

The image is upside down in another app

That app may read BMP row order incorrectly. The PNG is stored the right way up.

03

The PNG is still large

Photos and noisy scans compress less. For photos, use our BMP to JPG converter.

04

Colors differ in one viewer

Some viewers apply color profiles differently. The pixel values are the same.

05

It says the file can't be read

A damaged or non-standard BMP can't be decoded. Save it again from the source app.

06

Still not working

Check the file is really a BMP and not a renamed format.
