HOW IT WORKS

Convert BCSTM to WAV in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your BCSTM file

Drag and drop a .bcstm music stream extracted from a 3DS game or theme, or select it from your device.

02

Convert to WAV

Keep WAV as the output format and start. The DSP-ADPCM or PCM audio is decoded to uncompressed 16-bit PCM.

03

Download the WAV

Download one WAV per BCSTM file. It opens in Audacity, any DAW and common media players.

BCSTM

BCSTM is the NintendoWare music stream format of Nintendo 3DS games, such as The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D. It holds DSP-ADPCM or PCM audio, often with a loop point so the music can repeat during play. 3DS home menu themes also store their background music as a BCSTM.

WAV

WAV is a RIFF-based audio format commonly used for uncompressed PCM audio. It is easy to edit and broadly supported in recording, broadcast, and desktop audio workflows.

FILE FORMATS

BCSTM and WAV compared

SOURCE

BCSTM

BCSTM is the music stream format of Nintendo 3DS games and themes. Most use Nintendo's DSP-ADPCM codec at about a quarter of PCM size, some use PCM16, and many hold several stereo tracks the game mixes live. Loop points make the music repeat without a gap, often at the 3DS-native rate of 32728 Hz.

TARGET

WAV

Microsoft and IBM defined WAV in 1991. It normally stores plain PCM audio with no compression, which is why editors, DAWs, broadcast systems and speech tools accept it without question. The price is size: CD-quality stereo takes about 10 MB per minute, and tagging support is limited.

USE CASES

Use Cases for BCSTM to WAV

Practical workflows where BCSTM to WAV conversion is useful.

logo

Edit 3DS music in a DAW

Open the WAV in Audacity, Reaper, FL Studio or Ableton Live to cut, remix or master a 3DS track.

logo

Keep the 3DS sample rate

The WAV keeps the 3DS-native 32728 Hz rate, so the audio is not resampled on the way out.

logo

Split the layers of a multi-track song

A multi-track BCSTM becomes one WAV with every track kept as its own channel pair. Split the channels in an editor to hear or reuse each layer on its own.

logo

Make an extended loop

Inner-loop tracks come out as the intro, two loop passes and a 10 second fade. Cut and repeat the loop in an editor to make a longer version.

logo

Rework music for a 3DS theme or mod

Decode an existing BCSTM, edit it, then re-encode it with your usual BCSTM tool. The WAV has no loop points, so set them again when you re-encode.

logo

Archive a 3DS soundtrack

Keep decoded WAV copies of a 3DS soundtrack that open on any computer, without game-specific tools.

logo

Sample game music for production

Producers can sample 3DS music in WAV, which every sampler and DAW accepts.

logo

Encode to another format yourself

Start from the WAV when you want to make a FLAC, AAC or OGG file with your own encoder.

logo

Learn a melody by ear

Musicians can slow the WAV down in Audacity or Transcribe to learn a 3DS melody or write it out as sheet music.

logo

Use music in a video edit

Video editors get a WAV that imports cleanly into Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which BCSTM Files Can I Convert?

BCSTM streams from Nintendo 3DS games and themes are supported.

DSP-ADPCM streams

Decoded with vgmstream's reference decoder.

PCM16 streams

Come out bit-exact.

Multi-track streams

Each stereo track is kept as a channel pair in a 4 or 6-channel WAV.

32728 Hz tracks

The 3DS-native rate is kept in the WAV.

A folder of streams

Upload many files and download the WAVs as a ZIP.

Only convert audio from games you own or have permission to use.

TROUBLESHOOTING

WAV Not Sounding Right?

Game audio works differently from normal music files, which explains most surprises.

01

The track repeats and fades out

Looping game music is rendered the way the game plays it: the looped section plays once more, then fades out over 10 seconds. A loop covering the whole track plays once.

02

It says the BCSTM is incomplete

A file holding less than 97% of the audio its header describes was cut off while extracting or downloading. Upload the complete file.

03

It says the file can't be decoded

The file is damaged, isn't really BCSTM audio, or was extracted with the wrong tool. Extract it again from the game files and retry.

04

The WAV is very large

WAV is uncompressed, about 10 MB per minute for 44.1 kHz stereo and more for higher rates or extra channels.

05

The WAV plays as surround

Multi-track WAVs have no speaker layout, so players treat 4 channels as quad and 6 as 5.1. Split the pairs in an editor.

06

3DS-rate files won't load in an app

Some apps don't accept 32728 Hz. Resample to 44.1 or 48 kHz in an editor.
