HOW IT WORKS

Convert AWB to WAV in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your AWB file

Drag and drop a .awb file from a game's sound folder, or select it from your device.

02

Convert to WAV

Keep WAV as the output format and start. Each sound in the bank is decoded to 16-bit PCM.

03

Download the WAVs

A bank with one sound gives one WAV. Larger banks give one WAV per sound, numbered in bank order and zipped on the download page.

AWB

AWB is the wave bank format of CRI ADX2 (also called AFS2), used by CRI-middleware games for streaming music and voices. One .awb holds one or many sounds, usually HCA or ADX audio, while the cue names that go with them are kept in a matching .acb file.

WAV

WAV is a RIFF-based audio format commonly used for uncompressed PCM audio. It is easy to edit and broadly supported in recording, broadcast, and desktop audio workflows.

FILE FORMATS

AWB and WAV compared

SOURCE

AWB

An AWB is a CRI ADX2 wave bank (AFS2) holding the streamed sounds of a game, usually music and voice, as numbered entries. The entries are typically HCA or ADX, and ATRAC9 or VAG in PS4 and PS Vita games. The names live in the matching .acb, and many games encrypt the audio with their own key.

TARGET

WAV

Microsoft and IBM defined WAV in 1991. It normally stores plain PCM audio with no compression, which is why editors, DAWs, broadcast systems and speech tools accept it without question. The price is size: CD-quality stereo takes about 10 MB per minute, and tagging support is limited.

USE CASES

Use Cases for AWB to WAV

Practical workflows where AWB to WAV conversion is useful.

logo

Remix a game soundtrack

Load the WAVs of a CRI-middleware game's music bank into Reaper, FL Studio or Ableton Live.

logo

Edit voice lines for a fan dub

Decode a voice bank to WAV and clean up or replace lines in Audacity or Adobe Audition.

logo

Convert the audio an .acb points to

When the ACB converter reports that the sounds are in a streaming .awb, convert that .awb here to get them.

logo

Keep every channel of 5.1 game music

Multichannel sounds stay multichannel: a 5.1 track becomes a 6-channel WAV you can open in a DAW.

logo

Edit sounds for a game mod

Decode the original voice lines or effects to WAV, edit them, then rebuild the bank with a CRI modding tool.

logo

Open PS4 and PS Vita sound banks

Banks from PS4 and PS Vita games that store ATRAC9 or VAG entries decode to WAV as well.

logo

Hear looped music as a full piece

Tracks that loop over part of themselves come out with one more pass of the loop and a 10 s fade-out. Whole-track loops play once.

logo

Sample game sound effects

Producers can chop effects and voice clips from a bank's numbered WAVs in a sampler, which reads WAV directly.

logo

Archive a game's sound banks as PCM

Keep uncompressed WAV copies of a game's .awb banks so they open in any audio software later on.

logo

Re-encode to another format once

Use the WAVs as a clean intermediate for FLAC, AAC or Opus in your own encoder, so the audio is compressed only one more time.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which AWB Files Can I Convert?

CRI ADX2 wave banks (AFS2) are supported.

HCA and ADX banks

Music and voice banks of CRI games.

ATRAC9 and VAG banks

From PS4 and PS Vita games.

Encrypted banks

Decoded for the many games whose keys are built in.

Multichannel sounds

Every channel is kept in the WAV.

Partly cut-off banks

Every complete sound is still delivered.

Only convert audio from games you own or have permission to use.

TROUBLESHOOTING

WAV Not Sounding Right?

Game audio works differently from normal music files, which explains most surprises.

01

I got a ZIP of numbered files

The file held several sounds, so each one became its own WAV, numbered in bank order. Sounds have numbers, not names.

02

It says the file is encrypted

Some games encrypt their audio with their own key. Files from the many games whose keys are built in decode normally; others can't be converted.

03

The track repeats and fades out

Looping game music is rendered the way the game plays it: the looped section plays once more, then fades out over 10 seconds. A loop covering the whole track plays once.

04

The WAV is very large

WAV is uncompressed, about 10 MB per minute for 44.1 kHz stereo and more for higher rates or extra channels.

05

It says the file can't be decoded

The file is damaged, isn't really AWB audio, or was extracted with the wrong tool. Extract it again from the game files and retry.

06

I want the cue names

Names live in the matching .acb. Files are numbered in bank order.

In games, an .awb file is a CRI ADX2 wave bank (AFS2 format) that stores streamed music, voices and other sounds, usually as HCA or ADX audio, while the matching .acb file holds the cue names and playback data. The same extension is also used for AMR-WB (wideband AMR) speech recordings.
