JPG

JPG is the most widely supported photo format, with lossy compression that keeps files small.

FILE FORMATS

AVIF and JPG compared

SOURCE

AVIF

The Alliance for Open Media released AVIF in 2019. It stores images with AV1 compression, supports transparency, HDR and 10 or 12-bit color, and typically produces files around half the size of a comparable JPG. Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari show it, but many editors, CMS plugins and older devices still can't.

TARGET

JPG

The format every phone, browser, printer kiosk and social site accepts. JPG compresses photos by discarding detail the eye is unlikely to notice, so a 24 MP picture fits in a few megabytes. It has no transparency and only 8 bits per color channel, and every re-save loses a little more quality.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which AVIF Files Can I Convert?

AVIF images from browsers, phones and image tools are supported.

Standard AVIF

8, 10 and 12-bit AVIF stills.

AVIF with transparency

Transparency is flattened, because JPG has none.

Animated AVIF

The first frame is converted.

Tiled (grid) AVIF

Gives one JPG.

A batch

Upload several AVIFs and download the JPGs as a ZIP.

TROUBLESHOOTING

JPG Not Looking Right?

These explain most differences.

01

The JPG is larger than the AVIF

AVIF compresses far more efficiently than JPG, so the JPG is usually bigger.

02

Transparent areas became solid

JPG has no transparency. Use AVIF to PNG to keep it.

03

HDR images look flatter

JPG is 8-bit SDR, so HDR AVIF images lose some brightness range.

04

Only one frame came out

Animated AVIF gives its first frame. JPG is a still format.

05

Banding in gradients

8-bit JPG can band where 10 or 12-bit AVIF didn't.

06

Still not working

Check the file is really AVIF and not a renamed WebP or HEIC.
