HOW IT WORKS

Convert AVI to VCD in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your AVI files

Drag in .avi files with DivX, Xvid, MJPEG or other common video.

02

Convert to VCD

Start the conversion. The video is encoded to the White Book Video CD spec: MPEG-1 at 1150 kbit/s with MP2 stereo sound.

03

Download and burn

Download the .mpg and add it to a Video CD project in ImgBurn, Nero, CDBurnerXP or similar software.

AVI

AVI is Microsoft's 1992 video container, common for DivX and Xvid files, old camcorders and webcam recordings.

VCD

Video CD is the 1993 disc standard for MPEG-1 video on a CD, playable in nearly every DVD player.

FILE FORMATS

AVI and VCD compared

SOURCE

AVI

Audio Video Interleave was Windows' standard video container through the 1990s and 2000s. AVI files from that era usually hold DivX or Xvid video with MP3 sound, while cameras and webcams wrote Motion JPEG. AVI has no proper support for subtitles or modern codecs, and browsers and phones don't play it.

TARGET

VCD

The White Book Video CD standard puts about 74 to 80 minutes of MPEG-1 video on an ordinary CD. The picture is 352x288 (PAL) or 352x240 (NTSC) at a fixed 1150 kbit/s with MP2 stereo sound, roughly VHS quality. Almost every DVD player, and many older players across Asia, still reads Video CDs.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which AVI Files Can I Convert?

AVI files with common codecs are supported.

DivX and Xvid AVI

Classic MPEG-4 ASP AVIs.

H.264 and MJPEG AVI

Other common AVI video is decoded and re-encoded.

25 fps sources

Become PAL VCD (352x288 at 25 fps).

23.976, 24, 30 and 60 fps sources

Become NTSC VCD (352x240 at 29.97 fps).

Long videos

About 10.4 MB per minute, so 74 or 80 minutes fit on one CD.

TROUBLESHOOTING

VCD Not Working?

Most issues come from burning, not from the file.

01

I expected a .vcd file

A Video CD is a disc layout, not a single file. Burn the .mpg as a Video CD project in your burning software.

02

The player won't read the disc

Burn it as a Video CD project, not as a data disc, and try a CD-R rather than a CD-RW.

03

The video is too long for one CD

Videos aren't split across discs. Split the AVI first if it runs longer than 74 or 80 minutes.

04

The picture is soft

VCD resolution is far below DVD and HD, roughly VHS quality.

05

Widescreen video has black bars

The VCD picture is 4:3, so widescreen video gets bars at the top and bottom.

06

Subtitles are missing

AVI subtitles are usually separate files, and they aren't burned into the picture.
