AT3 files hold Sony's ATRAC3 or ATRAC3plus compressed audio in a RIFF/WAVE container. PSP and PS3 games use them for music, voices and sound effects, including the SND0.AT3 music that the PSP's XMB menu plays when a game is selected. Phones, browsers and most audio editors can't play them.

AT3 files hold Sony's ATRAC3 or ATRAC3plus audio in a RIFF container, written by Sony's tools for PSP and PS3 games. The PSP's game menu plays each game's SND0.AT3 as background music. ATRAC is a lossy codec close to MiniDisc's, and normal players can't decode it.
TARGET
MPEG-1 Audio Layer III has been the universal music format since the 1990s. It compresses audio by removing sounds the ear is unlikely to hear, so a song takes a few megabytes instead of tens. ID3 tags carry the title, artist and album art, and every phone, browser, car stereo and editor plays it.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Game audio works differently from normal music files, which explains most surprises.

Looping game music is rendered the way the game plays it: the looped section plays once more, then fades out over 10 seconds. A loop covering the whole track plays once.

Truncated rips, where the header promises more audio than the file holds, fail instead of giving partial audio. Rip the file again.

DRM-protected OpenMG files from Sony's music software can't be decoded.

The file is damaged, isn't really AT3 audio, or was extracted with the wrong tool. Extract it again from the game files and retry.

MP3 holds two channels, so 5.1 and other multichannel audio is mixed to stereo. Convert to WAV to keep every channel.
