Adobe Illustrator files hold vector paths, artboards, type and layers. Since Illustrator 9 they are built on PDF, and when saved with the Create PDF Compatible File option they include a PDF copy that other programs can render. Logos, packaging and print artwork are often delivered as AI, which most people can't open without Illustrator.
TARGET
Scalable Vector Graphics is a W3C standard from 2001. Instead of pixels, an SVG lists paths, shapes, text and gradients as XML, so a logo looks equally crisp on a phone and a billboard. Browsers render SVG natively, and it is the usual format for icons, logos, charts and illustrations on websites.
