HOW IT WORKS

Convert 265 to MP4 in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your 265 file

Drag in the .265 file from your camera's SD card, NVR or DVR export. The converter recognises the recording type from its contents.

02

Convert to MP4

Start the conversion. The H.265 video is copied into an MP4 tagged hvc1, and G.711 or ADPCM sound becomes AAC.

03

Download the MP4

Download one MP4 per file. It plays on iPhone, Mac and in Safari, and in other players with HEVC support.

265

A .265 file holds H.265 (HEVC) video written by an IP camera, NVR or DVR. Many cameras save .265 files to their SD card in the HXVT format, and Xiongmai/XMeye and HiSilicon-based recorders use the name too. Regular media players usually cannot open them.

MP4

MP4 is the most widely supported video container. With H.265 video tagged hvc1, it plays on iPhone and Mac, in Safari, and in other players with HEVC support. Firefox, older TVs and Windows PCs without HEVC support cannot show the picture.

SOURCE

265

A .265 file holds H.265 (HEVC) video from a newer DVR, NVR or IP camera, either as a bare stream or inside the maker's own framing. H.265 needs about half the bitrate of H.264 for the same picture, which is why 4K and long-retention recorders use it. Windows and many phones need extra codecs, and players can't time a bare stream.

TARGET

MP4

MPEG-4 Part 14 is the default container for phone recordings, web video and streaming. MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound plays on iPhone and Android, in every browser, on smart TVs and in Windows and Mac players without extra codecs. It holds text subtitles and chapters, but not picture-based subtitles.

USE CASES

Use Cases for 265 to MP4

Practical workflows where 265 to MP4 conversion is useful.

logo

Watch footage straight from the SD card

Pull the card from your camera and convert the .265 files. Each frame keeps the camera's millisecond time, so the clips play at the right speed.

logo

See night recordings at their real length

An SD-card (HXVT) recording from a camera that drops to a lower frame rate at night still plays at the right speed in the MP4, with its G.711 sound in sync.

logo

Convert Xiongmai and XMeye NVR recordings

H.265 recordings from Xiongmai-based NVRs become a standard MP4 that Apple devices and HEVC-capable players open.

logo

Play clips on iPhone and Mac

The MP4 is tagged hvc1, so it opens on iPhone, Mac and in Safari without extra software.

logo

Keep the small file size

The H.265 video is copied, not re-encoded, so the MP4 stays about as small as the .265 recording.

logo

Send footage to an insurer

Give the claims handler a standard MP4 of the incident instead of a raw .265 file that needs the camera's app.

logo

Hand a clip to the police

Officers with an Apple device or an HEVC-capable player can watch the MP4 without installing camera software.

logo

Save clips before the card is overwritten

SD-card cameras record over the oldest footage. Convert the clips you need, and the whole recording is kept at its recorded quality.

logo

Recover a cut-off recording

A .265 file that was cut off part-way through starts at its first complete picture in the MP4, so the rest of the clip is still usable.

logo

Open a raw stream from a camera's encoder

A plain raw H.265 stream has no container, so most players reject it. In an MP4 it opens with the frame rate taken from the stream, or 25 fps when the stream states none.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which 265 Files Can I Convert?

Recordings from DVRs, NVRs, IP cameras and dashcams are supported.

NVR and IP camera exports

H.265 footage from newer recorders and 4K cameras.

Vendor-framed recordings

Files wrapped in a recorder maker's own framing.

Plain raw HEVC

Bare H.265 streams.

Recordings with camera sound

G.711 and ADPCM sound becomes AAC.

Several clips

Upload a batch and download the MP4s as a ZIP.

TROUBLESHOOTING

MP4 Not Playing Right?

Most problems come from how the recorder exported the clip.

01

It says the recording is encrypted

Some recorders encrypt exports. Export the clip again with encryption turned off.

02

It says the file has no video

The export may be empty, all zeros or audio-only. Export the clip again from the recorder.

03

Parts of the picture are garbled

Damaged spots lose frames up to the next key frame. The rest of the recording is kept.

04

An editor stutters on the clip

CCTV footage often has a variable frame rate, which some editors handle less well. VLC and browsers play it smoothly.

05

Windows won't play the MP4

Windows needs Microsoft's HEVC Video Extensions for H.265. VLC and browsers on most devices play it.

06

A bare stream plays too fast or slow

A raw stream with no timing information plays at 25 fps.
